The Buttermarket

CLUE: A local farmer hid the next letter four times in the building he loved, and is just off Platform 8

This 1835 building spent most of its life known as the Howard St Warehouse, though more recently it has been transformed into a nightclub. Its design allowed the canal to come into it from the back, and its large entrance allowed easy access for horse drawn carts!

A relatively unknown beer-house, it opened in 1883 and was recorded as the Coal Tavern in 1896. It's on the site now occupied by the goods yard.

This pub was first known as the Eagle and Tun, recorded between 1832 and 1868. The pub was used to celebrate the opening of the Buttermarket on Howard St, with a public dinner of 300 assembled and drinks were provided by the Eagle Inn. We lost this pub to railway expansion works in 1900.

Recorded first in 1871, the Rock and Fountain is now the headquarters of the Shrewsbury Ark homeless charity. It is a very rare name for a pub, and is likely based around ancient legends of natural springs
